National CARES Mentoring Movement

Founded in 2006 by Susan L. Taylor, as Essence CARES, while she was Chief Editor of Essence magazine, the mission of the National CARES Mentoring Movement is to break the cycle of intergenerational Black poverty through mentoring and implementing life-transforming initiatives. To date, our local CARES Affiliates in 58 U.S. cities and 23 states have recruited and placed over 140,000 mentors, supporting more than 200,000 children in need.

Our local CARES affiliates recruit, train and connect masses of caring adults to schools and youth-serving organizations that are desperate for Black volunteers. They also become part of our own transformational, whole-school, group- mentoring initiatives, designed by experts to heal trauma and transform young, fragile lives.

Local affiliate leaders working in 58 U.S. cities to recruit mentors and build life-transforming programs that break the cycle of inter-generational Black poverty.

Deepening our commitment to children in crisis, National CARES is building the capacity to replicate its signature initiatives: The Rising: Elevating Education, Expectations and Self- Esteem, a whole-school transformation program, that nourishes and elevates the lives of struggling children in some of our nation’s most blighted Black communities; and the innovative HBCU-Public Schools STEM and Literacy Initiative. Both programs are designed to ensure that our industries and government will have the skilled, diverse workforce needed to keep our communities and country socially and economically strong. Our University for Parents is a strategic and life-changing workforce-readiness initiative to advance parents—children’s first mentors—who are trapped in intergenerational poverty.

National CARES has created a blueprint for breaking the cycle of intergenerational Black poverty that is destroying children’s lives. In collaboration with other community-focused organizations, we are building clusters of supported schools and undergirding parents, helping to heal lives, families and out divided Nation.
