HOW NCMM WAS STARTED

Susan L. Taylor, then editor-in-chief of Essence magazine, launched Essence CARES during the 2006 Essence Music Festival, following the devastation of Hurrican Katrina. After 37 successful years at Essence, Taylor left the company to devote herself full time to her passion: building the National CARES Mentoring Movement (NCMM).

"What they see, is what they'll be," says Thomas W. Dortch, Jr., Atlanta-based businessman and chairman emeritus of the 100 Black Men of America (100BMOA). Dortch serves as chairman of the NCMM's board of directors.

It was Dortch and the 100BMOA which helped launch NCMM.  Read Susan's full story on how her vision for NCMM began to take form.
